The Coffee and Dragons Toolbox
We get asked all the time about the tools, software, and sites we use to run our games, build our worlds, and keep the stream looking sharp.
The truth is, even an epic campaign needs great technology! We’re happy to share the resources that fuel the Coffee and Dragons adventure—from totally free tools that are perfect for new players, to the paid software we use to bring the most immersive experience to the stream.
Free Resources: Start Your Adventure!
We believe everyone should be able to roll dice and tell a story without a paywall. These fantastic resources are either entirely free or offer robust free tiers perfect for players and new Dungeon Masters alike.
- DNDBeyond.com - Character building and digital rulebooks. As a player, you can create up to seven characters at no cost and access the basic rules. It's the cleanest character builder out there!
- Owlbear.Rodeo - Our go-to for a lightweight Virtual Tabletop (VTT). It’s completely free to start and super easy to learn. It’s perfect for new virtual DMs who want a simple space for maps and tokens without a steep learning curve.
- 5e.Tools - Quick access to D&D rule content. This is like having all your physical sourcebooks available online. It’s a great, searchable resource for finding rules, spells, and items on the fly.
- RPGBot.net - Character optimization and build advice. We use this to help our new players understand their class choices. It's an awesome resource to see what choices are generally considered "good" or "bad" for a character build.
- TheFatefulForce.com - Maps, artwork, and VTT tokens. They offer a wonderful set of free starter resources for DMs, including art and battle maps, with paid content available if you want to upgrade.
Paid Resources: Powering the Stream
These tools are a critical part of our investment into the stream, helping us create the high-quality, customized experience you see every session.
- FoundryVTT.com - Our main Virtual Tabletop program. This is a one-time purchase VTT that is highly customizable. It keeps everything we need in one location and allows us to import characters from D&D Beyond, saving us tons of prep time!
- Inkarnate.com - Custom map and world creation. When we need a unique location we can't find anywhere else, this is the tool. It's a fantastic, custom map-making software that makes our homebrew worlds look professional and immersive.
- DMsGuild.com - Finding third-party adventures and content. This is a vibrant marketplace for creators. We find a huge range of quality third-party content here—from fully paid adventures to "Pay What You Want" modules—to help inspire our next quest!
